PlatinumGames' 2079 police action: you fight with a bound Legion on a chain, mixing investigation in the Ark with close combat.

About This Game

Astral Chain is an action game from PlatinumGames, published by Nintendo on August 30, 2019. The setup is a near-future city called the Ark. Something is tearing holes between worlds. You play a police officer who does not go in alone: you bind with a Legion, an interdimensional partner on a visible chain, and you fight as a pair.

A session splits between two jobs. In the field you direct the Legion while you shoot, slash, and reposition — the chain is a tool, not a cutscene. Between fights you walk cases: talk, scan, and piece together why a district went wrong. The game wants both the Platinum combat snap and the feeling that you are on a beat, not only in an arena.

The Legion is the design hook. You send it through a gap, hold a line, or finish a combo you started. The city look is clean and late-century, closer to a patrol than to a ruined kingdom. You walk a future precinct with a creature on a leash and learn how that pair moves.

Pros

  • You and the Legion fight as one pair, not as a tag-in assist
  • Case work between fights gives the Ark a beat, not only arenas
  • PlatinumGames combat stays readable when the chain is in play
  • The 2079 precinct look is specific — patrol gear, not a generic dungeon

Cons

  • Investigation stretches can cool the fight pace if you came only to brawl
  • Learning to steer the Legion and your officer at once takes a few missions
  • The tone stays official and bright; it is not a grim dark-fantasy crawl
