Nintendo's 2017 arena fighter: you punch from across the stage with spring arms, curving shots around the other fighter.

About This Game

ARMS is a fighting game from Nintendo, released June 16, 2017, with Nintendo as developer and publisher. The cast does not stand in a two-meter boxing ring. Each fighter has extendable arms. A punch leaves the body, crosses the arena, and can curve. A grab is a commitment. Blocking and jumping are the answers, like other fighters, but the space is longer.

A match is an arena bout. You pick a fighter, pick a pair of ARMS, and learn how that rubber physics reads. Party modes and a light climb sit around the same punch. The look is bright sports-festival, not a dark tournament basement.

The whole ARMS set is fighters, arenas, and that one joke taken seriously — what if a fighting game was about the space between two fists. You pick a pair of springs, learn the bend, and throw the next punch. The play is the fist in the air, not a roster menu.

Pros

  • Curving punches make spacing a different skill than Street Fighter footsies
  • Each fighter's ARMS pair changes the match without a hidden combo Bible
  • Arenas and party modes keep the festival tone
  • Matches are short enough to run another

Cons

  • The long-range slapstick will feel wrong if you wanted tight close-range footsies
  • A small cast compared with giant fighting rosters
  • The bright sports look is the whole mood — not a lore fighter
